Developer Labs is a space for Leap Motion engineers and developers to share and discuss innovative projects and technical insights.

What makes a great Labs post?

Passion, insight, and creativity. Your post should let readers into your creative process and show why your project matters. Developer Labs has a broad readership from a variety of backgrounds, so your post should feature a solid introduction that brings us into your story, with a good mixture of perspective and technical insight. You can repost content from your personal blog, or write something completely new. It’s important that you only post your own work (unless you have permission from the original author) and avoid using profanity or objectionable content.

Does my writing have to be perfect?

While some level of English competency is necessary, we have a place for anyone with great ideas and innovative projects. Our blog editor will help with grammar, syntax, and all things linguistic to help make your post informative and engaging for our readers. Great posts are engaging and personal, written in your own distinctive voice, as if you were talking to a fellow developer. Developer Labs is a place where a variety of opinions about the platform can flourish into an ongoing conversation – in the comments, on the forums, and even between posts. When you’re finished, it should be a post that you’d be excited to read.

What kinds of media do you accept?

We love to see your project in action, and we accept videos, screenshots, code samples, and links to working demos whenever possible. Each post can feature a hero image, which must be at least 864 pixels in width.

How long should my post be?

Lengthy, insightful posts are always welcome – although if your word count runs beyond 2000, we might want to split it into two or more pieces to enhance readability. Be sure to consider how much you can reasonably cover in the course of a single blog post, as we may cut down on excessive diversions, or ask you to narrow and refocus the attempted scope of your post.

What’s your editorial process?

Typically, we collaborate in Google Docs during the drafting and editing process. While you can initially submit your post in another format (e.g. Word document or existing blog post), we will make comments and edits through Google Docs. Our blog editor will review your post, and make revisions and suggestions along the way, as well as bring aboard other members of the Leap Motion team to assist with technical questions. Once major revisions are in place, we’ll move your post onto our WordPress site, and issue you a username and password. Once the post is ready, it will be entered into our publication queue.

When will my post be published?

We believe in giving every post on Developer Labs its time to shine, so we have a queue of approved posts, often two weeks in advance. This allows us to individually feature and promote each post as it appears. Plus, due to our robust approval process, it may take some time for us to fully review your post. For these reasons, we’re not always able to give an accurate timeframe on when your post will go live. However, we will let you know as soon as we publish your post, so that you can share it.

Can I promote my website, company, or product?

Developer Labs is a collaborative space for Leap Motion developers, not a platform for sales pitches. Your post should only cover things relating to the topic at hand. However, your post can include a short profile about you, with a link to your Twitter handle, GitHub, or website. Have any suggestions about how we can expand and improve upon these guidelines? Send us your thoughts through our contact page.
