New projects and features, insights on the future of human-computer interaction, and updates on Leap Motion developer communities around the world.

My news feeds are different. Suddenly I find them full of hackathon hype and posts about the tech startup industry. It wasn’t like always like that; just six months ago I only personally was friends with a handful of other software engineers, and we didn’t even interact that much.

Leapouts is a collaborative 3D model builder, controlled with Leap Motion interaction, that runs inside a Google Hangout. We’ve made a demo available for you to try at leapouts.com. But how did we build it over a weekend without ever having used the Leap Motion API, Firebase, or Three.js before?

From documents to gaming, it seems like we’re always looking for new ways to use the hidden power of the browser. Now, thanks to the LivePainter team, you’ll soon be able to add motion-controlled animation to that list. They want to make it easy for anybody to create animations on the web.

Controlling a robotic arm to perform real-time tasks can be a real challenge – alternating between a joystick and keyboard. At the LEAP.AXLR8R, Mirror Trainer founder Liz Alessi is using Leap Motion technology to make robotic arms more efficient, natural, and intuitive extensions of our bodies – robots that you could wear like a glove. The robot arm works […]

Last week, we saw how touchless gaming can train your brain and help with physical rehab. But what if the Leap Motion Controller could be used to control medical devices during heart surgery? Plus, real-time sign language translation, 10 tips for getting your app into Airspace, and a wall that responds to human movements. To […]

No surgeon likes to walk away from a patient on the operating table with a tube in their heart. While coronary catheterization can help people with a wide variety of heart problems, physicians are still forced to leave their patient’s side to control the catheter and avoid breaking sterile procedures. But that’s about to change. Thanks to DriftCoast, surgeons may soon be able to touchlessly control cardiac catheters within the operating theater.

Ever wonder how apps make it into the Leap Motion App Store? While all apps have to pass our comprehensive set of review guidelines, we’ve noticed that some blocking issues are more common than others. Today, I’d like to share the top 10 most common reasons that we often have to say “not yet” – including links to the relevant guidelines. Hopefully, these tips will help you glide through the app review process.

What if casual gaming could help people suffering from physical injuries recover faster? This week on Developer Labs, see how two LEAP.AXLR8R teams are gamifying physical therapy to help victims of conditions ranging from stroke to lazy eye. In other news, check out our latest beta preview – version 1.2 of Airspace Home and the […]

Could 3D interfaces make it possible for people with eye problems to see in three dimensions? James Blaha has strabismus or “cross-eye,” which means that his brain ignores input from his non-dominant eye. By creating a game that forces your eyes to work together, he hopes to offer a therapeutic virtual-reality solution that makes it fun for people to overcome their amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus with games.

Around the world, artists and developers are using the Leap Motion Controller to break down the boundaries between art and human beings. This week on Developer Labs, we have a table transformed into a musical instrument, creative software reinvented, and how artists are using motion control to change how we experience art. Plus, highlights from […]
