We made history on Thursday with 16 dance finalists competing for an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 and eternal glory. Through the magic of AltspaceVR’s FrontRow feature and a live DJ, over 380 people were in attendance, but everyone was able to watch the top 16 bring the house down with their mad moves.

What if music was a physical material? Not just sounds in the air, notes on a page, or numbers in a program, but a 3D structure that can unfold and spring to life?

The votes are in! Based on community ratings and scores from the Leap Motion team, we’re excited to present the winners of the second annual 3D Jam. This year’s 3D Jam raised the bar with over $75,000 in cash and prizes, and we’re impressed with the imagination and creativity of everyone who participated. With nearly […]

Take an infrared selfie and post it @LeapMotion #3DJam. Create your dream house in VR. Weave light and sound with your bare hands. Or just paint some happy little trees! In today’s 3D Jam spotlight, we’re featuring 17 brand-new art and music experiences and utilities that will ignite your creative spark. They’re all free for download at itch.io/jam/leapmotion3djam.

Over the next few years, billions of devices are going to spill onto the Internet and rewire our world in ways never before thought possible. Alongside augmented and virtual reality, the Internet of Things has the potential to change the world and how we see it. That’s why with this year’s 3D Jam we created […]

As the 3D Jam approaches, developers around the globe are already getting a headstart on their projects. Zach Kinstner, the creator behind Hovercast and Firework Factory, has been sharing his latest project through a series of videos – a virtual reality guitar! We caught up with Zach this week to talk about his design process, especially the guitar’s unique combination of visual depth cues.

Music videos have evolved significantly since TRL. Last week, we were thrilled to come across a new release from Darwin Deez called Kill Your Attitude, where the perils of modern love take some truly bizarre emotional and technical twists. Love (literally) becomes a battlefield when Darwin’s angry girlfriend becomes the player in a first-person shooter, taking the central conflict to some vividly imaginative heights as she hunts him down for great justice.

When virtual reality and musical interface design collide, entire universes can be musical instruments. Created by artists Rob Hamilton and Chris Platz for the Stanford Laptop Orchestra, Carillon is a networked VR instrument that brings you inside a massive virtual bell tower. By reaching into the inner workings and playing with the gears, you can create hauntingly beautiful, complex music.

Hand tracking and virtual reality are both emerging technologies, and combining the two into a fluid and seamless experience can be a real challenge. This month, we’re exploring the bleeding edge of VR design with a closer look at our VR Best Practices Guidelines.

Once the most underrated element of virtual reality, sound is now widely recognized to be a major element in creating VR with “presence.” In this post, we take a look at 4 ways that sound, VR, and motion controls can be a powerful combination.

Leap Motion soloist? It’s not as strange as it might sound at first. At a recent performance of the Berklee Symphony Orchestra, Muse co-creator Dr. Richard Boulanger played alongside classical horns and strings – in a composition specially written for his virtual musical instrument. Available for Mac and Windows on the Leap Motion App Store, […]
